ALA Recommends IE?
I just read my latest issue of American Libraries Online Direct and found out that the ALA MidWinter Meeting Itinerary Planner and Messaging System is now up and ready for use. Only one problem … apparently this site is best viewed in Internet Explorer.
No librarians that I know use Internet Explorer … not unless they’re forced to by their IT staff … so why the heck isn’t this page optimized for Firefox?? Come on people!! Did we learn nothing from the huge security warning we got last week about Internet Explorer? It’s time to make the switch!!

CNI recap
I blogged about the Mellon Award for technology Collaboration a while ago, but have not yet summarized presentations from CNI. Here are some notes from presentations I found interesting. (Links will take you to abstract on the CNI site, and hopefully will also get you to PowerPoint and other information.)
eXtensible Catalog Project Update
I have read about the XC project, but not extensively and not for a while, so I found this a good and timely overview. The XC aims to connect users to content. It does not aim to be an ILS replacement, but rather a discovery layer than can work with an ILS, but also bring in material not ...

William J. (WJ) Snowman
For the last four days, my home internet connection has been on the fritz. Mostly down but still sputtering off and on. In fact, if you listen very carefully I am fairly convinced that you can hear my router coughing and hacking away in the corner. The reason this is a fuss for me is that (as you may have seen on the news), Seattle has had the most snow it has seen in years (something like 40 years last I heard). So, if you work at WebJunction; at home because you are snowed in and you have no internet, what ever do you do? Well, you build a seven foot tall snowman of course!
And as you likely know, building a seven foot ...

NYT: “More readers picking up electronic books”
Found via TechMeme: the New York Times has an article about how “More Readers [are] Picking Up Electronic Books.” Although e-books have been around for ten years and failed to make much of a splash for most of that time, the article notes, this year the Kindle and Sony have both started picking up users—especially the Kindle.
Nearly one in four copies of the Oprah Winfrey bestseller The Story of Edgar Sawtelle sold through Amazon is sold for the Kindle, for example. The article also notes that many of these new Kindle users are considerably older than the usual gadget-loving demographic.
While the Kindle has proven ...

FaceBook Scandal Points to Strengths & Weaknesses of Social Networking Tools
A fascinating scandal on Facebook, uncovered by blogger Brad J. Ward, points to both the strengths and weaknesses of Social Networking tools.
The scandal revolves around an attempt by at least two companies, CollegeProwler.com and MatchU to corner the market, so to speak, on as many College 'Class of 2013' Facebook groups as possible using non-attending individuals to set up the groups and serve as Admins.
Once they were found out, representatives of these two companies, possibly sensing a public relations disaster, left comments on Brad's original post, apologizing for their actions and promising to vacate the groups th...

Privacy Commissioner to Release Guide on Social Networking at Work
According to their recent blog post, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada is expected to soon release guidelines to help employers draft policies for use of social networking sites in the workplace. The Office cites a recent study by Ryerson University that identified a digital divide between young Canadians who use social networks and their employers. The blog post explains:
…researchers found that, by and large, employers currently don’t have policies, guidelines or practices in place that govern the use of social networking sites in the workplace.
However, a small number of employers are starting to....

“What about structure & relationships?”
Kyle Jones asked the TTW gang in an email:
“We talk about the social web in terms of visible relationships being made, but we shouldn’t overlook the structure underneath these relationships. I stumbled over this while looking at the new Wordpress 2.7 interface: http://gmpg.org/xfn/ Just ponder it if you have a second.”
I did think about it. Nice to have some convo over email. We do this a bit (Michael and Katharine too) and some turn into a post.

The economic downturn will hit the Internet economy hard in 2009, according to the latest available OECD estimates.
The IT Outlook 2008 says that the IT industry is likely to have grown by 4% at most in 2008 compared to the previous year. But with the outlook for the global economy worsening and business and consumer confidence plumetting, growth will remain flat or decline in 2009.
Some sectors are expected to weather the storm better than others. Spending on software and IT services, including outsourcing, by gov...

E-books and the last p-issue of PC Magazine
I got my last paper issue of PC Magazine today. From now on, it’ll be all digital.
Hint, hint, hint to the book industry. You may treat e-books casually now—and hobble them with DRM and price gouges, while thinking, “Who cares? People can always buy paper books to keep forever.” But what happens when, like the magazine, you have no choice but to go digital all the way?

IT leaders share green-tech predictions for 2009

It’s that time of year again to dust of the old crystal ball and put forth some predictions as to what 2009 holds for the world of green technology. Rather than leaving the speculation to myself, however, I once again decided to tap experts at a host of organizations on how they envision green IT evolving in the year to come.
Suffice to say that no one has dismissed the green-tech movement as a mere passing fad. Both economic and political conditions (e.g. President-Elect Obama’s vision of a cleaner energy economy) will continue to drive vendors to develop greener wares and o...

Holiday tips on e-book readers—and book-capable gizmos like the PSP
DearAuthor has been running a useful series on e-book readers and book-capable devices, and now here are more tips—in MP3, from the Writing Show.
Ricardo, a Writing Show guest host living in Central America, offers a good round-up on such basics as e-book formats and the Kindle vs. rivals, including the new Sony PRS-700. The 700 comes with a built-in LED reading light for nighttime use.
I especially like his outside-the-U.S. perspective and his discussion of the Sony PSP as “a great e-book reader.” One glory of the PSP is that you can sneak e-books on it for kids to check out, when they’re b...

The ScrollMotion fuss: E-book lesson from VHS’s demise—plus a warning to literary blogger Maud Newton
“The last major Hollywood movie to be released on VHS was ‘A History of Violence’ in 2006,” reports the L.A. Times in a piece on the wind-down of a large VHS-supply operation. And now there’s talk that even DVD’s days may be numbered.
All of this should be a lesson for book publishers. Shouldn’t books be more of a permanent medium than Hollywood videos? Don’t we have the Web for ephemeral content? That is one reason why I find the ScrollMotion—with novels turned into iPhone apps, and with nary a mention of ePub in the corporate ballyhoo online—to be a threat to pu...

Worried about the amount of time today’s kids spend texting, chatting, blogging, gaming and Facebook-ing? Don’t.
Rather than fear the time young people devote to technological pursuits, there are many reasons for adults to embrace and even facilitate youth engagement with digital media, according to Florida State University’s Lisa Tripp, who was a member of a team of researchers who recently completed the most extensive qualitative study ever done on youth media use in the United States.

Best Books In Design & Innovation
It’s that time of the year. Many publications and websites are issuing their “best” of the year lists. I always check BusinessWeek’s best business books list to see if our library has acquired them all. But I made a new discovery this year. I found that BusinessWeek also produces a separate listing of their picks for the top ten books on design and innovation. I thought I’d share that list here.
I can’t quite say these books are ranked, but the first book listed is one I’m reading right now (well, sort of, I started reading Subject to Change about half way through). That’s B...
