Local news
Don't know if this made the national news, but it's obviously major here. It's a crazy world; this man was a regular in the library, and I have many stories about his "favorite (NOT) patron" status with myself and many of the staff. (for instance, I don't know why...he had taken to refering to me as 'that Bathsheba girl", and he complained to other patrons that we librarians "didn't know anything"?) But of all the numerous odd things he asked us reference questions about, he never asked about explosives or building bombs! He was old, alone, mean and crazier than we thought; I feel sad and disturbed. The senior living build...

Reference Desk Reverence?
In my own experience (and somewhat amplified by the Master’s Degree posts (first, second), there is a mystique that is lent to the reference desk like no other place in the library (save for closed stacks, the final mystery of the library world). It is the sacred space for the librarian immortals and perhaps the paraprofessional demigods who prove themselves worthy of its station. From behind this lauded furniture, answers are dispensed to all who seek wisdom within the walls of the library. It is the desk of last resort for those who continue to question, the deliverer of information redemption, and start of many journe...

Blogging the LOC: Class A
Last week, we began with a basic overview of the Library of Congress system used by K-State Libraries to organize all our books. If you didn't catch it, you might want to read it first. From here on out I'm going to assume you know what I'm talking about, as much as that's possible with regards to the Library of Congress system.
So today we begin with Class A. It would be awesome if LOC started out strong, so I could say "See! It makes sense and is great!" but unfortunately that's not the case. Class A is "General Works", just a bare step above "Miscellaneous" on...

The Resurrection of Newspaper Obituaries
Last week I started talking about newspaper obituaries. Today’s post details how we’re improving access to the obituaries we do have in our newspaper microfilm records, using an online index created with Yahoo Pipes.
Our microfilm records of the local papers go back to 1940. But microfilm is primarily an archival format, rather than an accessible format, so it can be cumbersome to use. Our biggest impediment was that we didn’t know what was there - when a patron contacted the reference Desk asking for someone’s obituary, it was very time-consuming for us to search the microfilm for an obituary, w...
