Primary schooling in Australia on the verge of change
I’ve been listening to an ABC podcast, a Background Briefing, that says the Australian public primary school system in real danger of disappearing - small state primary schools to be replaced by bigger schools, a new kind of primary school coming - ready or not. Bigger schools, different ways of learning, more special interest groups in class. Not [...]

Gratitude is Good for You
It turns out that gratitude is good for you. Robert Emmons is one of the fathers of the study of gratitude in psychology, and I've seen his name around the blogosphere a lot lately. I decided to investigate.Emmons & Michael McCullough's 2003 article "Counting Blessings Versus Burdens: An Experimental Investigation of Gratitude and Subjective Well-being in Daily Life" illustrates some of the effects of gratitude on well-being, exercise, and sleep. The studies suggest that a daily, long-term commitment to thinking about things for which one is grateful result in " ... substantial and consistent improvements in peop...

Case Class Uses Podcasting
A social work class at Case Western Reserve University is using podcasts to capture stories. I love that the professor calls each podcast a "learning asset". It is nice to see an example of podcasts being used in education rather than reading another story of how they may benefit education.
See the full announcement for more information. The 15 people enrolled in Jerry Floersch's podcast class on Tuesday evenings are taking to the streets like ace reporters to capture stories from the world of social work.
Floersch is an associate professor of social work at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Res...

Lawyers with depression
Lawyers are nearly three times more likely than the general population to experience depression, according to this ABA Journal article. However, they are coming out of the closet and developing ways to deal with it, including career counseling, assistance programs, and support websites.Lawyerswithdepression.com was created by attorney Daniel T. Lukasik, who writes:I also hope that it will make a difference for readers to know that I am a practicing litigator and suffer from depression. I am not a psychiatrist or psychologist, but I am a person who knows intimately what it is to suffer from depression and simult...

From the Chronicle of Higher Education’s Tech Therapy podcasts: Do professors know their copyrights?
Description of the podcast from the Chronicle: “In the days of paper reserves, course materials could be checked to make sure they conformed to copyright laws, says Bill Shell, director of academic technology and computing services at Eastern Michigan University. But in the age of the Internet and course software, professors can post anything online, bypassing those old checks. Today many professors could be breaking copyright law and not know it. In his appearance on this week’s Tech Therapy, Mr. Shell talks...

Twittory - The Darkness Inside
Cameron Riley from The podcast Network thought it would be fun to try to write a short fiction story using twitter. So did 140 of us who signed up to create the first twittory - The Darkness Inside.
The rules are simple - 140 people take turns to add up to 140 characters to a continuing fiction story. When we hit 140 entries the story is over. As lines are being written they are added to the wiki page.
So far we are up to person number 30, and the story has already has overlords, avatars, a poisoning and mysterious tunes from the past. You can hear more about it in G’DAY WORLD #305 - Twittories and Twitter with jjpro...
