A sexy future for librarians?
A blog post with the words sexy and librarians in its title has great potential to offend at least someone, but I'm going to try my hardest not to. I'm pulling the term sexy from someone else and they are using it in the 'excitingly appealing' context, so that should be OK then. The someone else is Marshall Kirkpatrick writing on Read Write Web. Like all good posts it draws on a couple of themes to make a point. The first theme is about the findability of user generated content on sites like YouTube. If the contributors of content could be helped with its description to make it more findable, those who are exci...

More Questions to Ask
In our last night of LIS768: Library 2.0 and Social Networking Technologies, we used this post as a way to talk about the future:
http://darmano.typepad.com/logic_emotion/2007/09/questions-for-t.html
I posted about it here back in September:
David Armano ponders digital immigrants and digital natives. He offers up a list of questions for ad/PR agency executives, pondering what kind of answers he might get. I think these might figure well into an interview for that emerging technology librarian job -- or, really, for any librarian job these days...

Library Funding
In the latest Thinking Out Loud with George and Joan George Needham revealed a startling finding from the next OCLC report. That library use does not correlate with library support. We can't assume that our members will support us in a bond issue. Nor can we assume those not using the library won't support funding. Rallying our members for a tax increase or bond issue is not the best way to get funding. We have to mobilize our supporters, whether members or not. The full report is due in the first part of 2008.For the use of members instead of patrons, users, etc. listen to the podcast.

Thinking Aloud - a-learning ;-)
A quick count of devices in our family that are: a) portable, and b) capable of playing audio files suddenly brought home to me just how accessible recorded audio is becoming from a technology point of view
I've thought for some time that audio could see a resurgence, and I'd be keen to know whether there are any OU course teams who are looking to use audio in a significant way in any new courses (in the past, many OU courses used to go out with audio or video content, as well as text-based print content).
As well as 'official' radio programmes being made available for download, the open courseware movement is turning up...

Wombat Divine
Wombat Divine by Mem Fox is one of my favorite Christmas books. I love the story, and the pictures are so sweet that it's a pure pleasure to read this book out loud to little kids. This story is about a little wombat who wants to be in the Christmas play. He goes to the try- outs with hope in his heart. Too soon he finds out that he is too big, too small, too heavy, not quite right, and so on. But he is ever hopeful that there will be a part in this play for him; and there is! I think that's what Christmas is like too. We want to be part of something bigger than ourselves, we want to find our part to play. If we're...

100 Days at the MLA – Roy Clare talks with Talis
Departmental right-sizing, transferring functions out of London to Birmingham, placing programs on hold, and even an appearance at a Talis Conference have all been part of Roy Clare’s first 100 days. The MLA’s enthusiastic new Chief Executive talks with Richard Wallis about the place and purpose of the organization, it’s challenges, and the opportunities for England’s Museums Archives and Libraries. Coming from several years working with biodegrading monuments at the National Maritime Museum, Roy is obviously up for the challenge. Virtual Midwinter
In my early years as a librarian I didn't have the chance to attend ALA's Midwinter Meeting or Annual Conference. During those years I wished that there was a way that I could attend without actually going to the city where the event took place. In those days that wasn't possible. But now there are opportunities to participate in ALA meetings without leaving your house or office. Some of the ways you can participate this year, even if you can't travel to Philadelphia for the Midwinter Meeting, include:

New at CARL - In the ruins of empire
In the ruins of empire : the Japanese surrender and the battle for postwar Asia by Ronald Spector
Spector follows up on Eagle Against the Sun, his account of the American struggle against the Japanese in World War II, with a chronicle of the aftermath of this crucial conflict. He tells the fascinating story of the deadly confrontations that broke out--or merely continued--in Asia after peace was proclaimed. Under occupation by the victorious Allies, this part of the world was plunged into new power struggles, or back into old feuds, that in some ways were worse than the war itself. International suspicions were still ...
