Enterprise 2.0 thoughts
Oliver at Headshift has an excellent post entitled 'Behind "Enterprise 2.0" Performance: Exploitation or Exploration?'Two particular comments stood out for me."IT people still put communication processes on the backburner and favour operational processes. They don't understand that knowledge work cannot be limited to processes, that it is multi-faceted communication flows around processed tasks that make things work. Meetings, e-mails, phone, IM, blogs, wikis, information aggregators and filtering devices wrap defined task oriented programmes up. The former help employees use the later, more efficiently".and:-"The corporat...

living vicariously through Podcasts
Thanks to LITA for making some LITA Forum sessions available through mp3s. Today I listened to David Lee King’s Keynote.
It was a good talk, a lot like what I expected, and I suspect it would have been even more interesting if I had seen the accompanying slides. There are write ups, too, for those who like to skim quickly rather than spend the length of a presentation listening.
My favorite take away point was listed in the LITAblog write up. David Lee King pointed out that in the past 11 years Yahoo has changed into an entirely different kind of site. We wouldn’t have predicted those changes, so who kno...

DLF and if:book Ponder Mass Digitization Issues
The Digital Library Federation and if:book are seeking comments on a series of questions about mass digitization issues that they will raise in invited brainstorming sessions as part of a project they are calling "The Really Modern Library."
Here's a suggestion: use CommentPress or a wiki to further refine ideas as the project evolves.

Yahoo nedlægger podcastpodcasts lever en trængselstid. Lidt ligesom radiostationerne. Og det er ikke blevet nemmere efter at Yahoo podcasts (startet oktober 2005) nu lukker pr. 31. oktober. Uden i øvrigt at angive nogen grunde. LinkSearch Engine Land.

Sadly, Findory will be shutting down on November 1, 2007. Greg Linden, founder of Findory says,"Some day, online newspapers will focus on your interests, building you your own unique, customized front page of news. Some day, search engines will learn from what you do to help you find what you need. Some day, your computer will adapt to your needs to help with the task at hand. Some day, information overload will be tamed. But not today. Findory will be shutting down on November 1. The website will no longer carry news, blogs, videos, podcasts, or favorites. All the M’s in Information
Librarianship as a career choice was a remarkable fit for me, because I like to know everything about everything or at least how to find it (don’t call it nosiness!). My undergraduate studies may have prepared me for playing Jeopardy but it was my library degree that made it possible for me to get that rarest of all things — a Perfect Job! As a librarian I get paid for following my passion — finding information, organizing information, getting information out to end users. In order to do my job correctly, I get to talk to people. By asking questions I get to find out what they need today and what they are...

New at the CARL- Black Swan: the impact of the highly improbable
The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable by Nassim Taleb
Summary: "A black swan is a highly improbable event with three principal characteristics: It is unpredictable; it carries a massive impact; and, after the fact, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random, and more predictable, than it was. The astonishing success of Google was a black swan; so was 9/11. For Nassim Nicholas Taleb, black swans underlie almost everything about our world, from the rise of religions to events in our own personal lives." - From the book jacket

The Future is Not Out of Reach: Change, Library 2.0, and Emerging Trends
Change affects each of us in different ways. Sometimes libraries change like turtles. We are the lucky ones. LITA, the techno geeks.
Social networking has been taking off in the last 2 years. Our patrons are using things like YouTube, but not all of us are.
Comments allow people to hold conversations on the web. It is like having an open meeting on the web.
Friending on the web is different then what it means in person. You can be friends for life. The web allows you to keep track of people much easier then before the web. Friends lists are a trust...

Food For Thought
My thoughts, exactly! These days, understanding nutritional guidelines can sometimes require a PhD and a ton of patience. Gone are the simple days when that cute, little food pyramid we memorized in grade school had all the answers to eating healthily. Today, simply walking into a grocery store can bring on a headache and a flood of questions – should I buy whole wheat, 7-grain, 9-grain, 12-grain, or just bite the bullet and pick up the white bread? We've all made uncertain meal choices in the past, but now there’s no more need to fret over spilled milk – or whether you should drink whole, skim, or 2%! Take a lo...

October on the road
Its that time of year again when all the conferences seem to queue up for your attention. So starting on Monday with a visit to Internet Librarian International in London, I'm having a busy October. Next on the agenda is Access 2007 in Victoria, BC, Canada where I am presenting about the Talis Platform. I must admit that I am really looking forward to both the conference and the west coast of Canada. So much so I have booked my self a rental car, and couple of days 'me' time, to take in the scenery. Any suggestions on the most scenic route from Victoria to Vancouver Airport, in three days, ...
