Ovid Users Get to Know the New Ovidsp
I posted earlier this month that Ovid launched a new version of ovidsp. The new ovidsp will be going live fairly soon, so it would probably be a good idea to be prepared before the switch.
Here are some ways that you can prepare for the switch:
Go to the ovidsp Resource Center and click on the Training Center tab. Ovid is offering new training sessions covering the enhancements made to ovidsp. They have web-based instructor sessions as well as online tutorials.
Quick Reference Cards, check it out online and order some for your library. They are also great to use as a starting point for customizing your...

New Ovidsp
This morning, before my morning caffeine infusion, I was asked to do a search for a doctor. I hopped on to my trusty Ovid MEDLINE database and conducted the search. It was a pretty straight forward search so I was kind of focused on getting in and out so I could get my morning Coke and wake up to the world.
It wasn’t until I was done with search did I notice a blue stripe banner up at the top of my screen advertising to try the new ovidsp. It was actually the gold button “Try It Now” that caught my morning (still caffeine free) brain. I have yet to really kick the tires and play with the new O...

Ovid to EndNote Export, Blank Record Fix
A blank record may appear in EndNote at the top of the record(s) imported from Ovid. If so, the ovidsp filter needs to be updated. The updated filter can be found at http://endnote.com/support/ensupport.asp. At this web page on the left green bar, click Import Filter. Choose Accept at the bottom of the page. At the Import Filters page, click the Filtering Options tag, and use the Filter By down arrow to scroll and select ovidsp. Then click the green Filter Files button. Look for the ovidsp Medline database updated on 9/14/09, and click Download. The file is to be downloaded into the Program Files for EndNote.

There are going to be some big changes to PubMed happening very soon. Actually some of the changes are happening already. They are going live with changes as they come about. Nursing@Ovid Database
About a month ago I had the opportunity to try out a new Ovid product called Nursing@Ovid (N@O). N@O's primary users are the nurses on the floor, who need answers to everyday (and maybe not so everyday) clinical questions. N@O is designed so that it can search three or more portals (additional databases) and Ovid's Nursing Collection (books and journals) at one time, similar to a universal search engine. These portals (databases) do not have to be Ovid owned databases. Therefore, libraries can add CINAHL, PubMed, Proquest’s Nursing & Allied Health Source, etc. as portals to N@O. The ability to search three porta...

Pull The Plug From Silverplatter WinSpirs and Webspirs
Today is the last day the Silverplatter Winspirs Platform will be available in the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and the University of Groningen.
To my knowledge it is the platform that has been used for the longest period in a row inside the hospital. One of my colleagues remembers pushing the first Silverplatter cd-rom into the library computer somewhere in 1988.
It has also been the most used, before being replaced by the freely available Pubmed.
Although the web version (WebSpirs) has "replaced" the windows version for years now, still many people have been using the windows-based interface on a ...

A few months have gone by and we have been able to look at and use Ovid's new interface for some time. In previous posts, I created a list of people who posted their own online documentation or training videos. For the most part these were people who focused on Ovid Advanced. How to Use Ovidsp’s Basic Search
It’s been almost 5 months since our University has been using the ovidsp interface exclusively. I’d have to say that reaction has been mixed. I find myself waffling over whether I love or hate the basic search more often than I care to admit. I tend to hate it when I’m helping someone on the reference desk, and I see that they’re getting 0 hits because they’re using the Basic Search the same way they use the Advanced Ovid Search. Or even worse, they’re doing parts of the same search in both the Basic Search and the Advanced Ovid Search. This brings up a larger question about whether it’s appropriate to...

How to: Use Gmail to Manage List Emails
I subscribe to a bunch of mailing lists because they frequently contain useful information, but being subscribed to these lists using the email account provided by our hospital would be problematic. The volume of postings on some lists would clutter up the acount, making it more difficult to manage and making it more likely I’d miss other, more important emails from inside our organization.
So I subscribe to lists using a Gmail account. Here’s why:
Separating list emails into a separate account allows me to treat them, as a whole, in a different manner than emails from higher-priority senders (patrons, co-wo...
