There are going to be some big changes to PubMed happening very soon. Actually some of the changes are happening already. They are going live with changes as they come about. Nursing@Ovid Database email this article save this article to My Clippings
About a month ago I had the opportunity to try out a new Ovid product called Nursing@Ovid (N@O). N@O's primary users are the nurses on the floor, who need answers to everyday (and maybe not so everyday) clinical questions. N@O is designed so that it can search three or more portals (additional databases) and Ovid's Nursing Collection (books and journals) at one time, similar to a universal search engine. These portals (databases) do not have to be Ovid owned databases. Therefore, libraries can add CINAHL, PubMed, Proquest’s Nursing & Allied Health Source, etc. as portals to N@O. The ability to search three porta...

Signalement des périos en SHS email this article save this article to My Clippings

Pull The Plug From Silverplatter WinSpirs and Webspirs email this article save this article to My Clippings
Today is the last day the Silverplatter Winspirs Platform will be available in the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and the University of Groningen. To my knowledge it is the platform that has been used for the longest period in a row inside the hospital. One of my colleagues remembers pushing the first Silverplatter cd-rom into the library computer somewhere in 1988. It has also been the most used, before being replaced by the freely available Pubmed. Although the web version (WebSpirs) has "replaced" the windows version for years now, still many people have been using the windows-based interface on a ...

How to Use Ovidsp’s Basic Search email this article save this article to My Clippings
It’s been almost 5 months since our University has been using the ovidsp interface exclusively. I’d have to say that reaction has been mixed. I find myself waffling over whether I love or hate the basic search more often than I care to admit. I tend to hate it when I’m helping someone on the reference desk, and I see that they’re getting 0 hits because they’re using the Basic Search the same way they use the Advanced Ovid Search. Or even worse, they’re doing parts of the same search in both the Basic Search and the Advanced Ovid Search. This brings up a larger question about whether it’s appropriate to...

How to: Use Gmail to Manage List Emails email this article save this article to My Clippings
I subscribe to a bunch of mailing lists because they frequently contain useful information, but being subscribed to these lists using the email account provided by our hospital would be problematic. The volume of postings on some lists would clutter up the acount, making it more difficult to manage and making it more likely I’d miss other, more important emails from inside our organization. So I subscribe to lists using a Gmail account. Here’s why: Separating list emails into a separate account allows me to treat them, as a whole, in a different manner than emails from higher-priority senders (patrons, co-wo...

Last month I wrote about how to use EZProxy's find and replace feature to change the unhelpful text on a database tab to something more helpful:EZProxy Find and Replace: when the vendor says they can't...  Well the Medical Librarians at U of C had another request; to see if we could get rid of that Tip Box that appears after a slight delay. The tip box is annoying because the delay in its appearing seems to contribute to the jumpiness of the screen - which is the real problem. There's a delay somewhere and I've seen my students use the system and boxes they tick, or in entering the search strategy, keystrokes don't r...
