Tooth Whitening and How to Find Out About It email this article save this article to My Clippings
We received a comment on this blog today. "Found this website, when I was looking for tooth whitening dentists (albeit a cheap one). But my question is really do the tooth whitening thing works. Can get that hollywood smile." This is a very common question these days, one that concerns a lot of folk. Now, since we're librarians and not dentists, I am going to talk mostly about how one could search for this topic of interest, just highlighting a few interesting tools and techniques. Most folks would start with Google. The question is what would you search for? Whiter teeth? Hollywood smile? Teeth whiteners? Tooth whiten...

Google and Health email this article save this article to My Clippings
Adam Bosworth leaving Google was interesting news, but somehow not surprising. I'm not sure why, but it struck me that Adam was never that engaged. He was the man behind much of Microsoft's future OS plans, he came to Google, and then he ended up...working on Health? Seemed like a parking spot on the way out, in retrospect. Now comes rumors that Google might buy WebMD. If I were writing two years ago, I'd say no way. Google isn't in the content/customer service/editorial business. But now, well, I guess I could see it. Things have changed. YouTube was a major move to the "we're a media company" hoop. Though it was entert...

Resources for Cyberchondriacs email this article save this article to My Clippings
Although Microsoft Word still underlines it in red, googling the word cyberchondriac provides 46,800 hits, and the term cyberchondria has had its own Wikipedia entry since June, 2005. It seems that the practice of self-diagnosing medical conditions with the assistance of Dr. Google continues to grow in popularity. Although health professionals have plenty of online resources at their disposal, specialized search engines are popping up to cater to the demands of laypeople in pursuit of an ailment, a cure, or merely a second opinion. For instance, Healia allows a searcher to filter their results for articles at a basic (or a...

Critiquing Review of Health Search at AltSearchEngines email this article save this article to My Clippings
The brand-new AltSearchEngines blog is off to a great start and I absolutely encourage libraryfolk should subscribe to it. One of the problems with writing about a specialized kind of search engine is that to do so requires specialized knowledge. AltSearchEngines faces this challenge every day. A recent post at AltSearchEngines seeks to overcome this problem in writing about health search by soliciting notes on a few sites by a cardiologist and a cardiology nurse. I love the idea of the post, but not the post itself. Who did the reviewing What follows is just general feedback from one nurse and one doctor. Ask ten docto...

We knew that Microsoft was acquiring medstory- today we learn that Healia is being acquired by the Meredith Corporation. Details here. Web 2.0: de wildgroei aan toepassingen in kaart gebracht email this article save this article to My Clippings

Microsoft as a search company on the way of committed searching? News from business world report that the Redmond software house has bought medstory, a health-related search engine. But what’s going on? ZDNet states the main purpose of Microsoft in this acquisition is to make research on intelligent searching… “medstory, which is based in Foster City, Calif., operates a search engine–currently in beta–that is geared toward the needs of consumers and health professionals who are looking for information on medical topics. I’m clearly no fan of medstory, but it still caught my attention to hear (via Resource Shelf) that medstory will be acquired by Microsoft. It isn’t the first time Microsoft has acquired a health care information technology company. If Microsoft is getting into the health vortal business, lets hope they dramatically improve medstory and make something really useful. See Also: medstory: Not even close.

medstory is a search engine that specializes in health and medical topics.  It is about to be purchased by Microsoft, so it is positioned to become one of the premiere medical sites online.  Enter a term to search and you don't just get the list of websites, but you have the option to refine your search either by selecting drugs, conditions, procedures, or personal health.  If you click the Research tab at the top, you will find connections to clinical studies, experts, and fields of study like molecular biology and anatomy.  It is a very nice presentation of information offering a variety of ways to lo...

Medstory: Not even close. email this article save this article to My Clippings
Well, a number of other bibliobloggers are pointing out medstory, and I was going to avoid doing the same until I tried it. I can’t take seriously any health information vortal that includes Wikipedia and returns a Wikipedia page as the top result for my search on pseudomembranous colitis AHEAD of MedlinePlus. It is far from a complete analysis of a health vortal to run one search and draw assumptions based on the top few results, but including a wikipedia result as the first result indicates a critical failure of those who created to vortal to understand what is important in the selection of consumer healthcare information.
