The Pregnant Widow by Martin Amis
Martin Amis's new novel shows a regathering of his artistic energies"First it was all moral patterning. And felt life. Then it was all drugs and fucks. Now it's all tits and arses." This pithily reductive progress report on Martin Amis's new novel is spoken by a character in it, summing up not only her student boyfriend's increasingly boisterous approach to Eng lit, but also, The Pregnant Widow suggests, the unintended consequences of a cultural revolution. She's speaking in 1970 – the year, as the narrator notes elsewhere, of Germaine Greer's The Female Eunuch and Kate Millett's Sexual Politics. Later in the decade, tho...

Discover Biographies and Memoirs in a Graphic Novel Format
Starting in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, the term graphic novel was first coined as artists and writers began to create more and more sophisticated stories using the traditional comic book format. With the publication of Art Spiegelman’s Maus in 1985, the violent and disturbing subject of real-life war was first presented through the format of the graphic novel. In Spiegelman’s award-winning Maus, Spiegelman shares the stories told by his father Vladek Spiegelman about life in Poland during WWII. Since Spiegelman’s Maus, the genre has continued to make giant leaps beyond Archie jokes and superheroes to suc...

Bringing User Centered Design to the Agile Environment
When the exciting opportunity to work in a post-bubble dot.com startup arose, I jumped to take it. I had the luxury of doing things exactly as I thought right, and for a while it was truly fantastic. I built a team with a dedicated user researcher; information architect; interaction and visual designers and we even made a guerilla usability lab and had regular test sessions.
Unfortunately, the enthusiasm I had for my new job waned after six months when an executive was appointed Head of Product Development—who insisted he knew SCRUM1 better than anybody. As the Creative Director, I deferred authority to him to deve...

The Vast Fields of Ordinary by Nick Burd
It’s the summer between high school and college, and Dade is struggling with a variety of issues. He’s gay, but hasn’t come out to his parents, and he’s in a secret relationship with a football player (who’s openly dating a popular girl). Things aren’t great at home, either, where his mother is drinking too much and his father is having an affair. Then he meets Alex Kinkaid, a little bit older, a drug dealer, but good-looking and kind. For the first time, Dade falls in love. As the summer progresses, Dade finds himself coming into his own, including owning his own sexuality, d...

Garland: Protest Same Sex Marriage, or DIVORCE? by Garland Robinette of WWL Radio of New Orleans
I have one opinion on the gay rights controversy, and I know my opinion is correct, beyond a shadow of a doubt. Those of you actively fighting against gay marriage have waaaaaay too much time on your hands.
I don’t believe your real reason for fighting gay marriage is because you are sooooo concerned about the threat to the institute of marriage. If you were, you’d be protesting people like me. I have been married three times. Elizabeth Taylor and me are the biggest threats ever faced by the sacred institute of marriage.

Boston: It Could Someday Be San Francisco
Ok, that was me trying to being funny about what is really one of the few cities to rival my glorious hometown. I always enjoy Boston, and the 40-ish weather, while worrisome from a climate-change perspective, certainly makes it easy to get around.
But I spent most of today doing vendor stuff (wrapping up the night in a fun Southie pub with hearty food and yummy draft beer–Dale’s Pale Ale on tap!) and I feel I should do a little round-up before it all evaporates, considering that I have repeatedly referred to my present abode as the Parker Roll Hotel.
First, when I interviewed at Peanut U, a faculty member aske...

Who Dat Nationalism or Now We Can Haz Mardi Gras?
It's been a disappointing month for the New Orleans Saints. The strain and stress of the long NFL season has taken its toll on the team's health and shaken its confidence. Just playing 16 professional football games is bound to do that, let alone the added pressure of maintaining a 13 game winning streak. Even during the tail end of that winning streak, we found ourselves writing each week that the Saints were, "beat the fuck up and wore the fuck out." Undoubtedly the team will benefit from the 2 weeks of rest they've allowed their key players. (The Saints wisely held many of their starters out of the meaningless season f...

So I say to myself, how did I get here?
I recently heard of a project called library Routes that's asking librarians to document how they became librarians: what led them to the profession, what path they've taken, et cetera. I realized that this is a story I haven't shared here, so I thought I'd post it.The story begins with my library heroes. When I teach the ODL "How to Think Like a librarian" class, the icebreaker exercise includes this question. I have two. The first is my mom. She was an elementary school librarian for more than 20 years, working in public and private schools, doing storytimes, felt boards, puppet plays, bibliographic instruction... t...

Sappho: the great poet of the personal | Charlotte Higgins
Hardly any of the Greek poet's work survives, but the fragments that remain are enough to make her immortalThis week is the inaugural meeting of my new poetry reading group, and muggins here has the job of introducing our first poet. Because I'm a classicist, I thought an ancient poet would be a good start. Because no one wanted to wade through an entire epic, we're doing Sappho, the 7th-century poet of the island of Lesbos. What will I be saying about her? Well, to me one of the most interesting things about Sappho is the way she's been read: the transmission of her works, and her reception. She was massively admired in an...

Gay marriage controversy hits the annual meeting of the Americal Historical Association
American Historical Association Annual Meeting begins today amidst controversy
Some of the events are being held at the Manchester Grand Hyatt, whose owner contributed heavily to the campaign in the state against same-sex marriage. The 1,625-room resort has been the subject of a boycott by gay-rights activists since July 2008.
There were calls for the historians to boycott the hotel and pull out of hosting the conference there, but the AHA replied that doing so would cost over $800 000, which would be too expensive. Arnita Jones, the association’s executive director, said, "We’ve been around a long time, but our membe...
