Library 2.0 Gang 12/09: Social Software in libraries
"Social software in libraries has been a hot topic for many a month. Like most of the technologies that we discuss on the Library 2.0 Gang, Social software covers a broad range of individual components, and can mean differing things to different people. Our guest for this show is Meredith Farkas, Author of the book 'Social software in libraries'"

Social Software in libraries, the book
Meredith Farkas, from Information wants to be free, and the Library Success wiki (amongst others) has finished her book "Social software in libraries". For those who just can't get enough, the book is backed up by a website. The websites points to a great collection of Del.icio.us links per chapter with additional reading material. You can't pre-order is just yet, but that will be coming here.Recommended reading! Compulsory, I'd sayTechnorati tags: Social software library2.0 libraries

Social Software in libraries
One of the books I'm currently reading is Social software in libraries : building collaboration, communication, and community Online by Meredith G Farkas (Amazon). It is a very readable, and seems to me reasonable treatment of the topic. Finding a mention of Catalogablog was a nice surprise.

A nice intersect of timing: a report from the UK and a book from the US announced on the same day. From JISC TechWatch, there is a report entitled “What is Web 2.0? Ideas, technologies and implications for education” (TSW0701) announced on the UK WebFocus blog. According to the JISC website: This TechWatch report was commissioned to investigate the substance behind the hyperbole surrounding ‘Web 2.0’. It reports on the implications this may have for the UK Higher and Further Education sector, with a special focus on collection and preservation activities within libraries. The US offering is the book, Socia...

Social Software in libraries: Not Quite a Review
Meredith Farkas’ new book, Social software in libraries, is a solid, well-written discussion of–well, what the title says. Just finished reading it, and this isn’t really a book review but here goes:
Well done, worth reading, lots of good information in a readable form.
There’s quite a bit here–it’s 282 pages not including the (detailed, well-produced) index and other material. That’s 282 pages of relatively small although heavily-leaded type (10 on 13, as far as I can tell); I’d guess this is close to 100,000 words, maybe more.
You already know Farkas writes well and thinks ...

Library 2.0 Gang guests Meredith Farkas
Talis December Podcast of the Library 2.0 Gang entitled Social software in libraries. Along with the usual suspects of Nicole Engard, John Blyberg and Marshall Breeding are joined by Meredith Farkas. Well worth a listen, in that it discusses the users needs rather than technology for technologies sake. The Mp3 is here.

Book: Social Software in libraries
Meredith Farkas' book Social software in libraries: Building Collaboration, communication, and Community Online has been published by Information Today. In addition to the book, Meredith has a web page with relevant resources.
Named one of the 2006 Library Journal Movers and Shakers, Meredith has done much to advance the cause of social networking tools in libraries. Many people know her from her wikis, which she has built in order to demonstrate how we can benefit from them (as well as contribute to them).
By thew way, if you're going to the Computers in Libraries conference, Meredith will be doing a...

More...Social software in libraries has been a hot topic for many a month. Like most of the technologies that we discuss on the Library 2.0 Gang, Social software covers a broad range of individual components, and can mean differing things to different people.
Our guest for this show is Meredith Farkas, Author of the book “Social software in libraries”. A couple of years after publishing her book, Meredith has become a little jaded about the way libraries are using social software, with some libraries seeing it as a magic wand for community building and engaging with their users. This chimed well with...

Uitgelezen: Social Software in libraries

Using Social Software in libraries
Just heard a great talk by Meredith Farkas called Building Academic Library 2.0. Meredith did a terrific job of talking about technology in a way that tech librarians would appreciate and that non-techies would understand. The talk was presented to academic librarians, but her tech explanations are also useful to anyone interested in social software like blogs, wikis, flickr, and podcasts to interact with patrons or students. Two non-tech recommendations that I especially liked:Let go of "the culture of perfect" -- if we wait for our web site, chat software, OPAC to be the elusive perfect, it'll never happen and we'll ge...

First Have Something To Say by Walt Crawford is a must-read for anyone who wants to write for the library profession. The language is accessible, and Walt lays out the processes in a way that just makes sense. I plan to purchase my own copy soon.
I read Walt's book in preparation for reading and reviewing Meredith Farkas' Social software in libraries. I won't be posting the review here or anywhere because (hopefully) it will be published in the first issue of the Journal of Electronic Resources Librarianship next year. If you have any interest in incorporating social software in your library, I recommend reading Mered...
