“Information Overload” vs. “Filter Failure”
on 1/10/2008, I wrote:
I’m sincerely flabbergasted to hear a librarian (or any information professional) complain that there is “too much data” or “too many RSS feeds.”
“web 2.0″ doesn’t cause an information glut. What causes an information glut is being an information glutton, taking on more than anyone can reasonably manage. There aren’t too many RSS feeds. Rather, there are users who subscribe to too many RSS feeds. The solution isn’t for less data to exist, the solution is smarter, more selective use of the data. The tools that help us filter and manage t...

“This book has something for nearly everyone. Even early adapters [sic] of web 2.0 technology may find an interesting tip. Those who wonder about the usefulness of web 2.0 for their work will discover several examples, whether in answering reference questions to organizing their own computer.”

Weeklings: J. D. Salinger’s Privacy, iPad’s Place in the Digital Hierarchy, the Many Faces of Bloomsbury, and Martin Amis’ Death Booths
J. D. Salinger has died. The writer who lived so privately has, in death, once again become the subject of the kind of intense public scrutiny that infuriated him. After the reflections of our own Daniel Kraus, the pieces I enjoyed the most were sort of quirky, personal views: Joanna Smith Rakoff’s memories of working for Salinger’s agent (”Dear Jerry, You Old Bastard,” Slate) and the Valley News piece about “one of the most enjoyable municipal conspiracies ever” — protecting the privacy of Cornish, Vermont’s most famous resident (”J. D. Salinger, Recluse of Cornish...

iPhone vs. Second Life: 1-0
Second Life und iPhone.
iPhone: rot
Second Life: blau.
Gartner ignorierte die eigenen Erkenntnisse und prophezeite:
By the end of 2011, 80 percent of active Internet users (and Fortune 500 enterprises) will have a “second l...

Apple’s iPad: A Gadget Killer — or Just Another Gadget?
Apple’s iPad: A Gadget Killer — or Just Another Gadget?
Apple, which brought consumers such hits as the iPod and iPhone, is wading into a new product category with the launch of its iPad, a touch-screen tablet computer that CEO Steve Jobs has said puts “the Internet in your hands” — and apparently much more.
At a press event on January 27, Jobs unveiled the 1.5 pound tablet computing device with a 9.7 inch screen and built-in Internet connectivity, which will be available for purchase sometime in late March. “We call it the iPad. What this device does is extraordinary,” said Jobs....

Paid vs. Free Content, Publishing Pains, Apple Tablets and All That …
Two recent events have rocked the publishing world. First, The New York Times, which many regard as the newspaper of record in the U.S., said it would abandon the practice of providing free online content and start charging regular readers beginning in 2011. And second, Apple’s much-hyped tablet — the iPad — made its appearance. What implications will the Times’ decision have for newspaper publishers and other providers of free online content? How will the iPad re-define what a book means, as well as how it is produced, mar...

The need to control and manage those boxes widgets in Eco-Netvibes.com and Widgetbox.com

Finding My Tribe – A Report from EDUCAUSE Learning Initiatives
I have a new post at ALA Techsource about attending EDUCAUSE Learning Initiatives last month:
http://www.alatechsource.org/blog/2010/01/finding-my-tribe-at-educause.html
Keynoter John Palfrey, co-author of Born Digital, gave a thoughtful presentation on his work studying Digital Natives. The revelation that the room should have been filled with librarians as well as faculty and IT staff came when Palfrey acknowledged the issue of information overload facing the natives as well as all of us and noted that the wealth of information out there now available to young people via mobile device presents a key challenge for librari...

You can also read the unabridged interview with Jaron Lanier on my site.

Re: Nothing is the Future, ctd.
Some of the commenters to Wayne Bivens-Tatum’s post “Nothing is the Future” seem to be under the odd impression that his post is an response to Library 2.0/101. It could be one till you get to the last paragraph of his post.
I've used "mobile" just as one example. The same could be said of various service or organization models. You can plug in any term you want, and know that when anyone tells you that thing is "the future," they're wrong. And to be clear, my criticism isn't of any particular services or trends. If there's a new, popular way for librarians to communicate with or reach out to lib...

The center’s final report on this multi-year research project, Assessing the Future Landscape of Scholarly Communication: An Exploration of Faculty Values and Needs in Seven Disciplines, brings together the responses of 160 interviewees across 45, mostly elite, research institutions in seven selected academic fields: archaeology, astrophysics, biology, economics, history, music, and political science.
“Our premise has always been that disciplinary conventions matter and that social realities (and individual personality) will dictate how new practices, including those under...

Something is the Future
Wayne Bivens-Tatum, a Princeton librarian and blogger, wrote an excellent post, called "Nothing is the Future." It attacks a certain sort of insipid library futurism—and is going all over the "Twittersphere":The kindest interpretation of statements like "the future is mobile" or "the future of reference is SMS" or "the future is librarians in pods" or whatever is that the librarians are trying to create that future by speaking it. The incantation will somehow make it so.... The less kind interpretation is that the authors of such statements are reductionist promoters, reducing a complex field to whatever marginal utility...

Finding My Tribe at EDUCAUSE
“I’ve found my tribe.” I surprised myself with the admission that I felt very at home with the attendees, speakers and organizers of the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative Conference 2010. I had never been to the conference before and I was rather nervous about my invited presentation. This was a step away from presenting in the library world. I'll confess that it felt a bit daunting. The theme of the conference was "Learning Environments for a web 2.0 World,” and the featured presentations, concurrent sessions and “Experience IT” encounter groups centered around what it means to use technology in education today, an...
