Europe: Parliamentarians call for more books to be put online
The European Parliament has asked the Commission to speed up the process of setting up a European Digital Library, which aims to become a one-stop shop for accessing literary and scientific works online.

Bibliotheque Nationale de France (BnF) Gallica Collection Will Become Part of European Digital library
European Digital Library grows after new French Contribution
The Bibliotheque nationale de France (BnF) helped the European Digital Library move a step closer to the goal of a fully comprehensive European collection of cultural heritage after announcing the development of their new Europeana portal.
According to the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL) the BnF managed to raise funds as well as provide a possible template of what a future European Digital Library may be. The funding will now allow the digitisation and uploading of an additional 80-100,000 items each year from the BnF’s Gallica collection.

European Digital library Suggests Model License to Cover Orphan Works

Member states drag feet on European Digital library

The European Commission has urged member states to step up efforts to make Europe’s cultural heritage available to citizens at a mouse click.
Plans for a European Digital Library containing books, paintings, music, film and photographs are already underway but progress on making works Digitally available has been slow with funding problems and lack of technical know-how dragging the ambitious project down.
According to commission figures, European libraries contain over 2.5 billion books but only around 1 percent of archival material has been made available online.

EuropeanaLocal is a project funded by the European Commission to "involve and help local and regional libraries, museums, archives and audio-visual archives" to provide access to their content through Europeana, the European Digital Library. The project started on June 1, 2008. A kick-off meeting was held on June 25-26.
