EU Takes a Few Steps in the Quicksand of Copyright Law in the Digital Age
From the Article:
The European Union has taken a few steps in the quicksand of copyright law in the Digital age.
It is still regulated by 27 different laws, one per country, which greatly complicates any effort to digitize cultural backgrounds and Internet advertising. Even the brand new Europeana, the European Digital Library, had to do the same as one of its collaborators in France and withdraw from the network part of its contents because it was authorized to make them available only to users of that country.
For that reason, the year 2010 promises to be richer in legislative initiatives in the field of Digital books. F...

Europe: Eastern Librairies Come to Brussels; More About Europeana
From the Article:
Europeana, the European Digital Library, is the aggregator of European cultural content. Interoperability is at the heart of what Europeana is doing: integrating format types across borders, across domains and between institutions. Museums, libraries, archives and audio-visual (AV) collections have different histories, user-groups and purposes. These are reflected in their diverse approaches to cataloguing and the development of varying standards. The result is that delivering all content types in the same online space requires a commitment to working collaboratively and sharing knowledge across long-esta...

Resource of the Week: Europeana
By Adrian Janes, UK Contributing Editor
Europeana is an ambitious collaborative project between European archives, libraries and museums. First launched in November 2008, the initial interest was so great that it overwhelmed the site. The current version is described as a prototype, with the full-scale launch now expected in 2010. But even at this stage, it is a most interesting resource, claiming currently to provide access to four million Digital items but anticipating this to have grown to 10 million by next year.
The types of items collected in Europeana are in the broad categories ...
