It’s summer road-trip time email this article save this article to My Clippings
Well, here it is, at last: Summer. Summer’s a great time for traveling, and, gas prices notwithstanding, it’s a great time for that most American of all pastimes: the road trip.  We love our cars, and we love driving across this vast nation of ours. So does Robert Sullivan.  As an East Coast native married to a woman who hails from the West Coast, Sullivan has made the cross-country drive more times than he cares to admit.  Luckily, he’s up for recounting many of his funniest (as well as his worst) experiences on the road, in his new travelogue Cross Country: Fifteen Years and 90,000 Miles on the R...

Book Reviews from Investigate a Good Book participants The High Calling by Gilbert Morris: Astounding! Gilbert Morris is one of my favorite authors. He weaves a story of Christian faith laced with just the right bit of romance. He tells of a young couple's struggle through WWII and the life that they both come to share. Burning Bright by Tracy Chevalier: Miss Chevalier is a sensational authoress. She depicts the streets of London in a dashing portrayal of cunning and intrigue. She opens our eyes to the conflict Londoners faced during the French Revolution. A Woman of Independent Means by Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey: T...

Flickr leech is another way of looking at all the pictures listed on Flickr. All this does is show pictures based on your search just like the real thing. There are two main twists thought. First it shows a lot of pictures at once, 200 to be exact. this stops you having to go through hundreds of pages just to find what you are looking for. it allows faster scanning through a lot more items. Second it does a nice job showing off the feature on Flickr known as interestingness. Instead of doing a search this allows you to see all the photos marked as special for that day. If you want to start doing some hard core searchin...

The Wonderful Thing about Hiccups by Cece Meng, illustrated by Janet Pederson. If you want a wonderfully silly book about libraries, you have found it.  The story starts with very loud hiccups in the middle of a quiet library.  Of course you have to hand upside down and drink water to get rid of them, so you go hang in a tree outside.  But when you find a big surprise, a hippo, in the tree you get so surprised that your hiccups vanish.  Each new part of the story starts with "The wonderful thing about..." and goes ahead from there.  The book usually has a negative part of the wonderful thing, m...

Hello Everyone!I am Shawna Bird, the new librarian for the Teen Department. I have been working at the front desk and the computer area of the library since last October. I have only been at this job for a few weeks, but it has gone by in a blur of business since the position was unmanned for quite a while. In addition to planning our booth for Grand Junction's 125th Anniversary Celebration, I have been digging through boxes and getting things organized. All the craft remnants left from last year's activities have been inspiring me with ideas for new projects. I have uncovered all kinds of goodies from hair jell to pic...

Cartoons and Comics email this article save this article to My Clippings
Books of cartoons and comics, as well as graphic novels, usually fit into a Dewey section reserved for drawings, 741.5, and we have books there that range from Calvin and Hobbes to classic manga. Scores of books, a great collection. We shelve these books in three locations: for adults, for teens, and for younger children - as a rough sort of guide as to content. Occasioally a cartoon book will be classified by the subject instead of the style. A Cartoon History of the District of Columbia is not in drawing but in DC history 975.3, so don't feel restricted to just the 741.5 books if you are on a cartoon quest. Anothe...

Is romance dead? email this article save this article to My Clippings
Say it ain't so! The romance genre has certainly taken a hit with yesterday's untimely demise of Kathleen Woodiwiss, one of the greatest romance novelists of my time, and some might say, all time. Certainly her novels spanned the globe and a few centuries. I remember exactly where I was and how old I was when I read my first Woodiwiss novel, The Flame and the Flower. Although I have not read her most recent books, I will certainly be watching for the publication of her last book, Everlasting, due out in late October. A guilty pleasure, she will be sorely missed.

Shug by Jenny Han and Scarlett by Cathy Cassidy email this article save this article to My Clippings
These two books are very similar in content: they're both about middle school girls who are struggling with not-so-perfect families, troubles at school, and the painful beginnings of romantic interest in boys, but while Shug is so successful at telling the story in a very true voice, Scarlett seems stilted and forced. I read Scarlett first, and thought it was ok. There were things I liked about it, but the story wasn't always believable, and the difficult situations were a little too easily resolved. I liked the setting of the story -- London and Ireland -- but it's one of those stories that feels like it's told from t...
