Introducing Video Tutorials
We've launched a new feature on the BC Courthouse Library Society website. Our Video Tutorials demonstrate research techniques and strategies in short videos that can be watched either through our website or on YouTube. On launch, there are six video tutorials, three on researching legislation and three on finding forms and precedents:
Tracing legislation back to when it was first enacted
Noting up legislation to see whether any cases have considered it
Researching the intent behind a piece of legislation
Using resources available through the library (CLE Online, our library catalogue, and O'Brien's Encyclopedia ...

Grauer Appointed to the Supreme Court of BC
The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., Justice and Attorney General of Canada, announced the following appointment, effective immediately: The Honourable J. Christopher Grauer, a lawyer with Dives, Grauer & Harper in Vancouver is appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Mr. Justice Grauer is replacing Mr. Justice Bryan F. Ralph (Vancouver) who resigned.

On Friday, Governor Patrick signed St.2008, c.79, An Act Relative to Child Passenger Safety. Under the new law, effective May 1, 2008, "No child under the age of eight and measuring less than fifty-seven inches in height shall ride as a passenger in a motor vehicle on any way unless such child is properly fastened and secured, according to the manufacturer’s instructions, by a child passenger restraint." Study Shows Supreme Court Justices Are All "Activist"
A study in the Spring, 2007, issue of Constitutional Commentary contradicts the supposition that only liberal justices are "activist." By analyzing the voting patterns of the justices on the Rehnquist court, researcher Ringhand found that both liberal and conservative justices are equally activist, and predictably, activist in ways that further their own political agendas. Surprisingly, the study also found that most of the votes cast by conservative justices to invalidate legislation were cast, not to invalidate laws which implicated issues of federalism, but laws dealing with First Amendment issues.
