Understanding voice over internet protocol (voip)

Cyber Security Tip ST05-018 Understanding Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) With the introduction of VoIP, you can use the internet to make telephone calls instead of relying on a separate telephone line. However, the technology does present security risks. What is voice over internet protocol (VoIP)? Voice over internet protocol (VoIP), also known as IP telephony, allows you to use your internet connection to make telephone calls. Instead of relying on an analog line like traditional telephones, VoIP uses digital technology and requires a high-speed broadband connection such as DSL or cable. There are a variety of providers who offer VoIP, and they offer different services. The most common application of VoIP for personal or home use is internet-based phone services that rely on a telephone switch. With this application, you will still have a phone number, will still dial phone numbers, and will usually have an adapter that allows you to use a regular telephone. The person you are calling will not likely notice a difference from a traditional phone call. Some service providers also offer the ability to use your VoIP adapter any place you have a high-speed internet connection, allowing you to take it with you when you travel. What are the security implications of VoIP? Because VoIP relies on your internet connection, it may be vulnerable to many of the same problems that face your computer and even some that are specific to VoIP technology. Attackers may be able to perform activities such as intercepting your communications, eavesdropping, taking control of your phone, making fraudulent calls from your account, conducting effective phishing attacks by manipulating your caller ID, and causing your service to crash (see Avoiding Social Engineering and Phishing Attacks and Understanding Denial-of-Service Attacks for more information). ...

The CliqueA Novel By Lisi HarrisonJust a quick heads up: This is a mean book!Massie Block is the 7th grade girl that everyone wants to be. She is the ruler of the clique and the social scene at OCD, Octavian Country Day School, an exclusive private girls' school in Westchester County, New York. Her life is just perfect until Claire Lyons shows up.Claire is the daughter of her father's old college friend. Claire's family will be living in the Block's guesthouse while her father starts work for Mr. Block and they look for a new home. It is clear from the start that Claire is not clique material with her new Keds and two year old white Gap jeans.Massie decides to make Claire's life miserable for no other reason than that she can and that she is the "new girl". Massie enlists her clique of friends to help harass and humiliate Claire. Claire fights back and ends up getting her revenge . . . sort of.This book sucks you into the shallowness of the has, versus the has nots. The school has a Starbucks in the cafeteria, designer clothes, cameras, phones and all of these "things" have an expiration date and before the year is out so is everything you own! This is the first book in this series so stay tuned for more meaness. You will just love it!The Clique . . . the only thing harder than getting in is staying in so come in and check it out! (Source: Lansing Library Teen Dept. Podcast)

Ruby HollerBy Sharon CreechDallas and Florida have been labeled trouble twins. No matter what they touch, you can expect it to be broken, dirty, or ruined when they get done with it. But it’s not entirely their fault. Dallas and Florida are orphans and have to live with the putrid couple, the Trepids. The Trepids have been trying to get rid of the trouble twins for quite some time, but every family that is even slightly considering adopting always sends them back. Dallas and Florida have grown up with harsh punishments like hours in the dark, creepy basement and wearing scratchy “I’ve Been Bad” shirts. It is just assumed by now that everything Dallas and Florida do is going to be wrong. One day Mr. Trepid tells the twins that they are leaving the home for a few months. The twins are to accompany an older couple on their vacations. Tiller and Sairy Morey want to go on separate vacations away from their quiet life in Ruby Holler, a hidden piece of land far from town. Tiller wants to row down a river and Sairy wants to hike over hills in search of an elusive bird. At first, the twins think the couple is crazy. They will certainly make Dallas and Florida their slaves; making them dig wells, and tend to pigs. All Dallas and Florida want to do is steal away into the night and catch the first night train out of town. It is only when the twins arrive at their new home in Ruby Holler that they realize that there might actually be nice people in the world. Dallas and Florida purposely do things wrong to test the reactions of the couple but are never scolded or punished. As time passes, the twins learn to respect and care about Tiller and Sairy.Ruby Holler presents a pleasant place with understanding people. Creech tells a story that shows that kids need positive reinforcement to be healthy, well-adjusted people. The relationship between the Moreys and the twins is magical. Both sides find what was missing in their lives. ...

From hate to hope: matthew boger

Matthew Boger, a prominent figure in equal rights activism, visited the library via Skype to speak on his life experiences. As a young man, Boger was ousted from his home due to his parents' intolerance of his homosexuality. On a summer night in 1981, Boger was severely beaten by several neo-Nazi youths, including a young man named Timothy Zaal. After years of healing and finding his way in life, Boger and Zaal (having renounced his former skinhead ways) were reunited at the Museum of Tolerance, where they both now work. The two work together, promoting the idea that hope and forgiveness can heal all wounds. Today, Boger is operations manager for the Museum of Tolerance. The video presentation is called "Blood Brothers" and is available at http://current.com/entertainment/86544881_blood-brothers.htm. Sponsored by the Friends of the Kankakee Public Library, Kankakee PFLAG, and Brother2Brother. (Source: Kankakee Public Library Podcast)

So you think you have a bad relationship with your mother? Wait until you read Demon Chick by Marilyn Kaye and you will end up eternally grateful for your own mom. Sixteen year old Jessica Hunsucker should have everything to look forward to: it's her birthday, she's getting a total makeover and she's finally spending some quality time with her mom, an aspiring presidential candidate. Or so she thought. Turns out mommy dearest has other plans, like trading her daughter's soul to the devil in exchange for political power. Jessica finds herself entangled in a massive cover-up that includes her kidnapping, murder and descent into hell. We learn that there are different levels of hell and Jessica doesn't have it too bad, everything is just okay. The food is neither too hot nor too cold, the houses are not exceptionally comfortable or pretty to look at, and the selection in tv viewing is severely limited but enough to keep you tuned in. As Jessica learns of her mother's dangerous political influence over the world, she devises a plan to return to earth and save mankind. (Source: Lansing Library Teen Dept. Podcast)

Fortune is fickle for the scaly narrator of Fred Marcellino's picture book I, Crocodile. The unnamed croc starts out living the good life on the Egyptian Nile surrounded by tasty dinner choices. But his happy times end when Napoleon Bonaparte invades and scoops up whatever strikes his fancy, including the magnificent crocodile. The croc finds himself torn from his beloved mudbank, crammed into a little cage for a ship ride overseas, and dropped into a fountain in Paris, where he is supposed to amuse Napoleon and guests. Amazingly, people flock to see him, making him a celebrity. He loves every minute--until he's not fashionable anymore. Then he's just a big critter stuck in an oversized water bowl with nothing good to eat. When Napoleon orders crocodile for dinner, the situation pushes the croc into daring action. It's lucky for him that he lives to tell his tale, though not so lucky for everybody else.Marcellino's illustrations bring out the liveliness and drama in the scaly storyteller's adventures. We see the crocodile's Egypt and Napoleon's Paris in rich detail. Though the humans show some spunk and energy, the crocodile comes across as the most expressive, most interesting character in the book--but then, he is the one telling the story.
Fat Kid Rules the WorldBy K.L. GoingTroy Billings isn’t just a fat kid. Troy is the fat kid. He is the fat kid that huffs and puffs when he breathes. He’s the fat kid that trips over everything. He’s the fat kid that jiggles when he runs. Worst of all, Troy is the fat kids that will always make people laugh, especially when it’s at his expense and would not be funny if a skinny person was involved. One day, Troy was standing on the edge of a subway platform, carefully considering how humorous it would be if he propelled his almost 300 pounds into the subway tunnel and splattered against a speeding train. Apparently, Troy found the scenario very amusing and started laughing. Troy’s fit of giggles was interrupted by a voice crammed in a tiny corner belonging to the dirtiest, skinniest boy Troy had ever seen. This was the day Troy met the infamous high school legend, Curt MacCrae. At first, Troy is in awe that the Curt MacCrae, the most amazing guitar player ever, is sitting in front of him. The astonishment continues as Curt demands Troy buy him dinner. He did, after all, save Troy’s life. It’s from there that Curt reveals his twisted brainchild; Curt and Troy are going to be a band. The biggest problem, other than his weight issue, is that Troy doesn’t know how to play the drums. But Curt has decreed it and now it is so. Troy takes Curt home with him where there is a run-in with Troy’s ex-military father and jock brother. Curt wiggles his way into their home and becomes a staple in the Billings home in the hopes that Troy and his family can help him get clean, while Troy is introduced firsthand to the world of underground punk rock and wonders if he could ultimately rule the world. While the plot of Fat Kid Rules the World may be a bit slow or non-existent at times, Going thrusts the story forward purely by relationships and self-actualization. ...

"Happily ever after" doesn't always end the fairy tale, as Beauty finds out in Michael O. Tunnell's Beauty and the Beastly Children. After Prince Auguste--formerly known as the Beast--marries Beauty, he becomes vain and self-centered like he was before his curse made him the Beast. Auguste cares more about hanging out with his hunting buddies than running his kingdom. He collects undeserved awards instead of spending time with his wife. He isn't even present when his triplets are born. His thoughtless, careless ways irritate Beauty until she can't stand it.Worse, Auguste's bad habits affect his newborn sons. When Beauty and Auguste first lay eyes on their triplets, they discover that the fairy's curse on Auguste has carried over to his children, who look and act like wild monsters from the minute they're born. They grow fast...too fast. Soon they're tearing through the castle, wrecking everything they can, and scaring the life out of everyone. It's up to Auguste to tame his beastly offspring, but can he handle the job? This tongue-in-cheek sequel to Beauty and the Beast shows a parent's inner ugliness causing his children's outer ugliness, manifesting through bad behavior even more than through appearance. John Emil Cymerman draws character expressions that enhance feelings and attitudes with depth and precision; there's no mistaking Beauty's disgust toward her husband or Auguste's high opinion of himself. Tunnell delivers his tale with sly humor and everyday wisdom that parents can appreciate with their kids. (Source: Lansing Library Youth Dept. Podcast)

We are pleased to announce that the implementation of the highly anticipated release of the new version of NoveList, communicated in mid-July, is scheduled to begin on August 4th. To accommodate the complex implementation, NoveList will be temporarily unavailable during the transition period. During that time, you will still have access to the NoveList Beta site. Clicking on the NoveList link from your library’s website will take you to a “NoveList is Temporarily Unavailable” page where you’ll see a link to the NoveList Plus Beta site. While certain features are not available in the beta version, (e.g., personal folders and catalog linking) you will still have access to the complete NoveList Plus database. Because there is no Beta version for the K-8 products, all NoveList users will be directed to the same NoveList Plus Beta. Best regards, The NoveList Team (Source: Lansing Library Internet and Technology Podcast)

The Case of the Missing Hamster by James PrellerJigsaw Jones may only be seven years old, but he is a top notch detective. For as long as he can remember, he has always tried to solve mysteries. When his friend, Wingnut, comes to Jigsaw with the sad story of his missing hamster, Jigsaw takes the case. Now Jigsaw and his mystery-solving partner Mila track down all the possible suspects linked in the disappearance of Hermie the hamster including a snake, Wingnut's brother, and a vacuum cleaner.Jigsaw Jones is a unique children's mystery series. Preller uses the tone and slang of an old-fashioned black and white detective film. Jigsaw Jones is definitely a series to turn to for those just starting chapter books. The story is simple, but fun. The best part about Jigsaw Jones is that there are plenty of books in the series, so once you get hooked, you can move right on to the next book.
Heir Apparent by Vivian Vande VeldeAt first, Giannine thought the $50 gift certificate for Rasmussem Gaming Center was the greatest gift her absent father could have ever given her. Giannine started to waver a bit when she past Rasmussem and saw several people outside protesting children’s exposure to violent video games. The vocal protesters who tried to block her path into Rasmussem were unsuccessful in stopping Giannine from experiencing one of the coolest things ever, a total immersion video game in which she goes through the game as if it were really happening.Inside, Giannine is met by a girl in medieval clothes with a tiny dragon pet. After considering a few possible game options, Giannine decides on the medieval role-playing game, Heir Apparent. In the game, Giannine is Princess Janine, a sheep farmer who has just found that that she is the illegitimate daughter of the king and the next in line for the crown. Even though Giannine was told there are many different ways to win the game, she soon finds out that one wrong step can bring her back to the game’s beginning, sleeping on a hill with her sheep dog Dusty. During one of her attempts, a voice interrupts her game play informing her that the protesters had stormed the gaming facility and have damaged the computer systems. Now Giannine is stuck in the game until she can find a way to beat it. Giannine must make alliances with wizards, soldiers, and even her half-brothers, who are also trying to claim the crown, in hopes of surviving the three days before her coronation. Every time her game starts over, Giannine changes a small detail or two, leading her to deal with barbarians, magic rings, decapitating poet statues, dragons, and more outrageous things. What Giannine doesn’t know is every attempt at defeating Heir Apparent may be her last as the machine she is hooked up to is still malfunctioning and could quite possibly leave her in a coma. ...

Cyber Security Tip ST05-004 Avoiding Copyright Infringement Although copyright may seem to be a purely legal issue, using unauthorized files could have security implications. To avoid prosecution and minimize the risks to your computer, make sure you have permission to use any copyrighted information, and only download authorized files. How does copyright infringement apply to the internet? Copyright infringement occurs when you use or distribute information without permission from the person or organization that owns the legal rights to the information. Including an image or cartoon on your website or in a document, illegally downloading music, and pirating software are all common copyright violations. While these activities may seem harmless, they could have serious legal and security implications. How do you know if you have permission to use something? If you find something on a website that you would like to use (e.g., a document, a chart, an application), search for information about permissions to use, download, redistribute, or reproduce. Most websites have a "terms of use" page that explains how you are allowed to use information from the site (see US-CERT's terms of use for an example). You can often find a link to this page in the site's contact information or privacy policy, or at the bottom of the page that contains the information you are interested in using. There may be restrictions based on the purpose, method, and audience. You may also have to adhere to specific conditions about how much information you are allowed to use or how the information is presented and attributed. If you can't locate the terms of use, or if it seems unclear, contact the individual or organization that holds the copyright to ask permission. What consequences could you face? * Prosecution - When you illegally download, reproduce, or distribute information, you risk legal action. ...

Cyber Security Tip ST05-005 Reviewing End-User License Agreements Before accepting an end-user license agreement, make sure you understand and are comfortable with the terms of the agreement. What is an end-user license agreement? An end-user license agreement (EULA) is a contract between you and the software's vendor or developer. Some software packages state that by simply removing the shrink-wrap on the package, you agree to the contract. However, you may be more familiar with the type of EULA that is presented as a dialog box that appears the first time you open the software. It usually requires you to accept the conditions of the contract before you can proceed. Software updates and patches may also include new or updated EULAs that have different terms than the original. Some EULAs only apply to certain features of the software, so you may only encounter them when you attempt to use those features. Unfortunately, many users don't read EULAs before accepting them. The terms of each contract differ, and you may be agreeing to conditions that you later consider unfair or that expose you to security risks you didn't expect. What terms may be included? EULAs are legal contracts, and the vendor or developer may include almost any conditions. These conditions are often designed to protect the developer or vendor against liability, but they may also include additional terms that give the vendor some control over your computer. The following topics are often covered in EULAs: * Distribution - There are often limitations placed on the number of times you are allowed to install the software and restrictions about reproducing the software for distribution (see Avoiding Copyright Infringement for more information about copyright issues). * Warranty - Developers or vendors often include disclaimers that they are not liable for any problem that results from the software being used incorrectly. ...

Cyber Security Tip ST05-008 How Anonymous Are You? You may think that you are anonymous as you browse websites, but pieces of information about you are always left behind. You can reduce the amount of information revealed about you by visiting legitimate sites, checking privacy policies, and minimizing the amount of personal information you provide. What information is collected? When you visit a website, a certain amount of information is automatically sent to the site. This information may include the following: * IP address - Each computer on the internet is assigned a specific, unique IP (internet protocol) address. Your computer may have a static IP address or a dynamic IP address. If you have a static IP address, it never changes. However, some ISPs own a block of addresses and assign an open one each time you connect to the internet—this is a dynamic IP address. You can determine your computer's IP address at any given time by visiting www.showmyip.com. * domain name - The internet is divided into domains, and every user's account is associated with one of those domains. You can identify the domain by looking at the end of URL; for example, .edu indicates an educational institution, .gov indicates a US government agency, .org refers to organization, and .com is for commercial use. Many countries also have specific domain names. The list of active domain names is available from the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). * software details - It may be possible for an organization to determine which browser, including the version, that you used to access its site. The organization may also be able to determine what operating system your computer is running. ...

Here are a few of our new titles this June. The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie MeyerBree, a newborn vampire and part of the army preparing to close in on Bella Swan and the Cullens, does not recall much about her life as a human, but knows enough to realize that she is a pawn in a dangerous game that could end in her death - for the last time.Wolves, Boys, & Other Things That Might Kill Me by Kristen ChandlerTwo teenagers becomes close as the citizens of their town fight over the packs of wolves that have been reintroduced into the nearby Yellowstone National Park. The Gardener by S.A.
"'If you can name something, it's not so scary," my dad always said." In Carrie Jones's Need, Zara White tries to go by what her dad used to say; it's why she names her fears and knows the names of many others. Naming her fears is one way Zara can handle being shipped off to snowy, unfamiliar Maine after her stepdad dies. Numb from grief, freezing in the eastern cold, Zara can't believe that the stranger who kept watching her back in Charleston has followed her to her stepdad's hometown, but he has, leaving a trail of gold dust in his wake. Though grandma Betty is tough and protective, Zara doesn't feel safe; she knows she's got trouble. At her new school, she makes an enemy before making any friends and isn't sure that the few friends she makes are truly friendly. All the while, the stranger gets closer and closer to Zara, forcing secrets into the open, bringing danger to Zara and to everyone around her.Need brings surprising twists to old folktales and digs in hard during the scarier parts. Zara's frustration with Maine gets forgotten as the threat against Zara and her stepdad's hometown looms closer. The action intensifies as the source of the threat is revealed--and reaches Zara herself. Zara tries to evade and fight back, which pushes the conflict to a series of turns as exciting as they are unexpected. (Source: Lansing Library Teen Dept. Podcast)

After a Bad Beginning things can only end up worse for the Baudelaire orphans! The second installment of Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events: The Reptile Room: Or, Murder!, sends siblings Klaus, Sunny & Violet to take their chances with their mysterious so called “uncle” Dr. Montgomery. It’s only after you find out that Uncle Monty is indeed the fun loving, coconut cream cake making, and lover of snakes that you start to wonder where this event will come unfortunate. The dastardly Count Olaf snakes his way into the Baudelaire’s lives once more, taking away yet another chance for the orphans to find true happiness in the world.Despite being arguable the most depressing and saddest of the series, Reptile Room offers suspense, sly humor, whimsical non sequiturs and most of all a story that hooks readers in not unlike the hook-handed man would attempt to do. Snicket doesn’t take a single step back from showing you just how utterly miserable the life of the Baudelaire orphans can get! After escaping from the horrors within the Reptile Room, you’ll be looking forwards to the Wide Window and the next some what great but always unfortunate adventure.
