Louis Riel: a comic-strip biography by Chester Brown (April 2007)
In 1869, the Red River Settlement area, home to the French-speaking Metis, is sold to the Canadian government. Louis Riel, the de facto leader of the Red River Settlement, demands that they be granted the right to govern themselves. Not suprisingly, the government refuses this. This story relates Riel's resistance to the Canadian government's mistreatment of the Metis community.Louis Riel - Wikipediahttps://owa.fibrehost.net/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_RielLouis Riel - rethinking Riel (CBC Archives)Louis Riel - Trivial Pursuit (CBC Archives) Place a hold on a WPL copy of the book here.

Let the guessing begin…
Word went out in the last couple of days that Oprah was going to announce her new book group pick on September 17th. And the crowds went wild. At least they did online.
The guessing yesterday was leaning towards the idea that Oprah might channel Alanis Morissette’s Isn’t it Ironic and choose Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom. Yes that Franzen. The guy who said ‘no thanks’ the first time Oprah wanted to feature his book. The guy who is getting so much press that other authors are feeling the lack for themselves. The guy who has a hashtag on twitter devoted to the whole shebang - #franz...

Sixth Sense
Een display op CES 2010
Skinput
Augmented Reality in ontwikkeling

August Anime Club Meeting
Today was the August meeting of the Anime Club, right on the eve of everyone returning to school. Tim showed us some clips from the Sonic the Hedgehog anime movie, clips from the Japanese video game it was based on, and some bonus Japanese Sonic commercials! Our manga drawing theme for the meeting was back-to-school, so we also watched some school-themed anime clips. I had super-cute school supplies--piggy pencil sharpeners and panda/frog erasers--for the four winners. (I got them at the dollar store by H-Mart, if you want to track down some for yourself.) Here are all of the drawings: Actual school supplies! Kelliann ...

Craft Closet Cleanout
Today, 17 teens dropped in to cleanout the craft closet! It was pretty busy, but everyone got to make a variety of stuff. I emptied at least six boxes of leftover projects, so I say it was a success! Several people did extra projects from this summer, including Relief-Painted Bottle Vases, Decoupaged Boxes, Fingerpainting, and Painted Picture Frames. There were also many other crafts hanging around from the past year, such as Message in a Bottle, Jean Leg Autograph Pillows, Scratch-Painted CD Magnets, and Vampire Glitter Gel. Check out the pictures: Fingerpainting!Relief-Painted Bottle Vases Jean Leg Autograph Pillows ...

Television to books
I seem to be thinking of books every time I watch TV lately - probably not a bad thing. True Blood made me yearn for more urban fantasy and when I watch The Closer I’m reminded of a couple of mystery series with strong female leads. One of which could be a template for the character of Deputy Brenda Lee Johnson - so much so that I was convinced at least one of the writers must have read the series by J. D. Robb before coming up with the Brenda character. Robb introduced her female cop, NYPD Lieutenant Eve Dallas, in her 1995. At the time I was working at a mystery bookstore and can remember seeing the bo...

We Zullen Ze Pareren.

Good Grief...Third Grade by Colleen O'Shaughnessy McKenna
This year, third grader Marsha Cassano, has vowed to have a neat desk at all times, and will never get in trouble. She has even signed a contract with her parents to show that she was very serious about these resolutions. Marsha has also stated that she is going to be nicer to her nemesis, Roger Friday, and not argue with him at all. Unfortunately, on the first day of school, there is Roger, back to teasing her, and Marsha responds by accidentally slamming her desk on Roger's fingers. This is NOT the way she intended the first day to go, especially with the new student teacher, Miss Murtland, being in c...

September Book of the Month
Fortune is fickle for the scaly narrator of Fred Marcellino's picture book I, Crocodile. The unnamed croc starts out living the good life on the Egyptian Nile surrounded by tasty dinner choices. But his happy times end when Napoleon Bonaparte invades and scoops up whatever strikes his fancy, including the magnificent crocodile. The croc finds himself torn from his beloved mudbank, crammed into a little cage for a ship ride overseas, and dropped into a fountain in Paris, where he is supposed to amuse Napoleon and guests. Amazingly, people flock to see him, making him a celebrity. He loves every minute--until he's not fa...

Soup Day
Soup Day by Melissa Iwai
Today is soup day, so a little girl and her mother head to the store through the snowy streets. There they buy the ingredients for their soup, careful to choose the vegetables with the brightest colors. They pick out green celery, yellow onions, orange carrots, white mushrooms and more. Back at home, they wash the vegetables and cut them into little pieces. The little girl gets to help with a plastic knife and the softer veggies. After sautéing the vegetables, broth is added and the soup cooks. The mother and child play together as the smell of soup fills th...

Fat Kid Rules the WorldBy K.L. GoingTroy Billings isn’t just a fat kid. Troy is the fat kid. He is the fat kid that huffs and puffs when he breathes. He’s the fat kid that trips over everything. He’s the fat kid that jiggles when he runs. Worst of all, Troy is the fat kids that will always make people laugh, especially when it’s at his expense and would not be funny if a skinny person was involved. One day, Troy was standing on the edge of a subway platform, carefully considering how humorous it would be if he propelled his almost 300 pounds into the subway tunnel and splattered against a speeding train. Appare...
